About

The DSP Solar project has been instituted under the Royal Command of His Majesty to advance solar PV initiatives in the country and to build local capacity in this vital area. The project is aimed to achieve carbon neutrality and enhance energy security by diversifying its energy sources. Through this project, Bhutan is not only protecting the environment but also ensuring a secure and sustainable future for its citizens. The Projects have been implemented to further the Royal Vision to: Work towards country's energy security needs; demonstrate Bhutan’s continued leadership in environmental conservation; establish technical and economic viability of solar PV in the country and pave way for uptake of solar PV by both private and public entities, and; to build local capacity in this growing and important sector.

The 250kW Solar rooftop project was launched on 05 June at the Centenary Farmers Market (CFM), Thimphu coinciding with the occasion of World Environment Day. The 500kW ground mounted grid-tied Solar PV project was launched on June 28, 2023 at Dechencholing, Thimphu. Today, CFM and Dechencholing solar plants are individually the largest solar installations in the country.
