01. Desuup Sonam Jamtsho : A Life Rebuilt Through DSP

Once trapped in a cycle of joblessness and substance abuse, 27-year-old Sonam Jamtsho’s life seemed to spiral beyond repair. After school, he moved to Thimphu with hopes of supporting his family. But unstable odd jobs and rising frustration slowly pushed him toward addiction. For a long time, survival felt like a dead end until one question changed everything:

“Is this the life I want?”

With a spark of courage, Sonam broke free from addiction through the De-suung Training. But recovery was just the beginning. To stay on a better path, he took a leap of faith and enrolled in the Plumbing & Sanitation course offered by the De-suung Skilling Programme (DSP).

What followed wasn’t just skill building it was life rebuilding. DSP equipped him with hands-on technical training, practical plumbing expertise, and work-ready skills grounded in discipline and service. In the classroom and on the field, Sonam regained discipline, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Today, he’s not only a certified plumber but also the store in-charge at the Serzhong DSP Centre, overseeing inventory, logistics, and supporting the skilling operations. He also does repairs and maintenance of the training center utilizing the skills gained. He is gainfully employed, self-reliant, and actively contributing to his community.

Sonam’s story is not just a story of survival it’s a story of transformation and empowerment. His journey is a powerful reminder that change is always possible, no matter how difficult the past.
