Seven Universities from Thailand presented honorary doctorate degrees to His Majesty The King, in a ceremony held at the Dungkar Dzong today.
Delegations from the universities travelled to Bhutan to present the honorary degrees.
His Majesty thanked the Universities for their meaningful gesture of recognition, and the people and Kingdom of Thailand for their genuine friendship and goodwill for Bhutan.
The Universities share a close connection with Bhutan, and have educated many Bhutanese students. The honorary degrees presented to His Majesty further strengthens the ties of close cooperation between the education sectors of the two countries.

15 June 2024: Hon'ble Prime Minister visited the DSP Solar Initiative project site at Dechencholing today.
The DSP Solar Initiative (DSP-SI) in Phase I successfully commissioned a 500 kW ground-mounted solar power plant at Dechencholing (June 9, 2023). In Phase II, 2.1 MW ground-mounted PV system was commissioned on June 1, 2024 at Dechencholing.
40 De-suups are currently engaged under the Project Implementation Unit's (PIU) guidance. Initiated upon Royal Command, this project aims to diversify Bhutan’s energy sources beyond hydropower, leveraging our 12 GW solar potential.
14 June 2024 — His Majesty The King visited the DSP Solar Initiative project site in Dechencholing today.
The DSP Solar Initiative (DSP-SI), in its first phase, successfully commissioned a 250 kW rooftop solar power plant at the Centenary Farmers Market on May 29, 2023, and a 500 kW ground-mounted solar power plant at Dechencholing on June 9, 2023. Funded by the Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTFEC), these projects were completed at a benchmark cost of Nu 54,000 per kW capacity.
Phase II includes an additional 2.1 MW ground-mounted PV system at Dechencholing, a 1.5 MW rooftop solar PV system at the Druk Gyalpo’s Institute in Pangbisa, and an expanded 200 kW rooftop solar PV system at the Centenary Farmers Market. The solar project at Dechencholing was test charged and commissioned on June 1, 2024. Currently, 40 De-suups are engaged in the project under the supervision of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the DSP Solar Initiative.
The Project was initiated upon Royal Command with the objective to diversify the country's energy sources beyond hydropower, leveraging Bhutan's 12 GW solar potential. It is chaired by Dasho Bharat Tamang, member of the Privy Council, who has previously served as the MD of Bhutan Power Corporation.
The DSP Solar Initiative aims to enhance Bhutan's energy security, showcase the country's leadership in environmental conservation, prove the technical and economic feasibility of solar power, and encourage its adoption by both public and private sectors. Additionally, it seeks to develop local expertise in the field through the De-suung Skilling Program.
The DSP in 'Carpentry and Woodworks' concluded on June 12, 2024, after a four-month training program held at Edelweiss Bumthang . The program saw the participation of 15 De-suups and was led by expert trainer Mr. Namgyel Wangdi Maurer.
The closing ceremony was honored by the presence of Dasho Ratna Bdr. Gurung, Dzongdag of Bumthang Dzongkhag, who awarded certificates to the trainees
The DSP in 'Web Development' and 'App Development with Flutter' commenced on 10 June 2024 at the DSP Training centre, Gyalposhing, Mongar. 29 De-suups are participating in the Web Development course and 19 De-suups are participating in the App. Development course for duration of 4 months.
Mr. Kamrul Islam is the expert trainer for Web Development and Mehedi Hasan is the expert trainer for App Development. Both the experts are from Learnio.
